General Food Guidelines for Dogs

(These guidelines are intended for healthy pets that do not require a specialty diet due to allergies or other health related diagnoses. If you have further questions/ concerns, please contact your veterinarian.

  • Protein should be less than 26%. High protein diets can have a potentially negative affect on your dog's mood and behavior.
  • "Grain Free" diets (as well as diets containing legumes and, in some cases, sweet potato) are best avoided due their link to heart disease.
  • Common food allergies can be associated with proteins in the food. The most common allergy related proteins are chicken, beef, and lamb.
    • Fish and Turkey diets are most recommended due to lower incidence of allergies.
(If your pet does not have a food allergy, any protein that your dog does well on is great)
  • We do NOT recommend a raw or homemade diet due the extreme difficulties in providing a consistent, balanced diet for your pet, and the increased risk of bacterial contamination.
  • We recommend AGAINST feeding your pet most human foods because of the potential for feeding something toxic, high caloric content leading to obesity, and rich foods leading to gastrointestinal upset or pancreatitis.
  • Avoid high calorie treats in excess or during training. Healthier options can include low calorie training treats, freeze dried real meat treats, and fruits and vegetables.
    • Your vet can provide a complete list of safe fruits and veggies upon request.
Some quality, recommended food brands include: Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Royal Canin. Foods that should be avoided include Blue Buffalo, Taste of the Wild, Ol'Roy, and "Fad" diets such as Rachel Ray etc.

* This is not an all-inclusive guideline or list of "good" and "bad" foods. Work with your veterinarian to find what works best for your pet and stick with it. *
